EMPOWER is built on the understanding that student success is shaped by both the environments around students and the capacities within them. Each pillar reflects a domain of flourishing that is strongly supported by higher education research: Environment, Merriment, Purpose, Optimism, Wellness, Engagement, and Resilience. Together, these elements form a holistic model that helps students succeed.
EMPOWER works because it recognizes that students are whole people. Their success is influenced not only by academic ability but also by their campus context, their sense of belonging, their holistic health, their connections with others, and their belief in their own potential. The framework integrates these factors into a cohesive approach that supports students’ growth, progression, and well-being.
EMPOWER also works because it aligns with what institutions know to be true: students thrive when they feel supported, connected, and purposeful. The model offers a shared language that higher education professionals can use to design programs, shape environments, and build relationships that empower students. It bridges the gap between research and practice, offering a clear, human‑centered way to support students in a rapidly changing world.
We Need to EMPOWER Students More Than Ever
Students today are facing unprecedented levels of uncertainty, disconnection, and pressure. The pace of change is fast. The world feels messy. Many people are searching for stability, clarity, and a sense of direction.
EMPOWER responds to this moment with a simple idea. Human flourishing is possible even in chaotic times. People can build lives that feel grounded and joyful. Students can cultivate the inner resources that help them stay steady, connected, and hopeful.
This framework offers a way to do that. It is practical, accessible, and deeply human.
Empower x Equity
EMPOWER is intended to be applicable to today’s diverse population of college and university students. It is particularly relevant for underrepresented and marginalized student populations.
The EMPOWER Framework
Environment
Students flourish when the environments around them affirm their identity, support their goals, and foster a sense of belonging. Environment includes the physical spaces students navigate, the social networks they build, and the cultural and institutional climates that shape their daily experience. Research shows that belonging, supportive relationships, and culturally responsive practices are among the strongest predictors of student engagement and retention. A healthy campus environment provides stability, connection, and the structural conditions that allow students to learn, participate, and thrive.
Merriment
Positive emotional experiences play a meaningful role in student success. When students enjoy their campus experience, feel connected to their community, and find genuine interest in what they are studying, they are more likely to persist and thrive. Merriment highlights the importance of joy, interest, and moments of delight in the academic journey. Merriment reminds us that satisfaction, enjoyment, and positive affect are not extras. They are essential contributors to student retention and flourishing.
Purpose
Purpose gives students a sense of direction and meaning in their academic journey. When students understand how their activities connect to their values, identities, and future goals, they are more motivated, more resilient, and more likely to be retained. In higher education, cultivating purpose means helping students clarify their aspirations, see the relevance of their studies, and discover more about themselves.
Optimism
Optimism is a grounded belief that progress is possible. Optimism helps students believe that their efforts matter, that challenges can be overcome, and that their future holds possibility. It supports academic self‑efficacy, persistence, and the ability to navigate uncertainty. Optimism is not about ignoring difficulty. It is the intentional practice of looking for possibility, imagining a hopeful future, and trusting that growth is achievable. This pillar encourages students to adopt a mindset that supports learning, curiosity, and forward momentum throughout their college journey.
Wellness
Student success is inseparable from student well-being. Wellness includes physical and mental health, but it also encompasses financial stability, basic needs security, and access to supportive resources. Financial stress, food and housing insecurity, and chronic overwhelm are among the strongest predictors of attrition in higher education. When students have the stability to meet their basic needs and the support to care for their whole selves, they are better able to focus, learn, and progress. Wellness reminds us that flourishing requires a foundation of security, balance, and care. Institutions play a vital role in creating the conditions that make this possible.
Engagement
Engagement is one of the bedrocks of college student retention and success. It includes academic and social components. When students participate actively in their learning, connect with campus professionals and peers, and contribute to campus life, they are more likely to thrive. Importantly, institutions need to strategically provide and promote intentional student learning activities.
Resilience
Resilience is the capacity to adapt, recover, and continue in the face of challenges. In higher education, resilience is linked to students’ (and professionals’) ability to navigate setbacks in students’ academic journeys. Resilience is not about “pushing through” or handling everything alone. It builds through supportive relationships, access to resources, and environments that normalize help‑seeking and learning from disappointment. It is essential for student retention and success.
